Beautiful atmospheric post impressionist landscape oil painting of a garden by noted German artist, Alice Sommer (1898-1942).  Here, we look into a garden of a big house or Maison de Maitre.  The sunlit path leads us to a flower bed, overlooked by a statue and shaded by a large oak tree.  To the right is a sentry house, or maybe a summer house. The play of light and depth here is enchanting, perhaps it is the early morning or late afternoon.  The hues on this textured canvas are quite delightful and the juxtaposition of the light in the foreground and the dark depths of the shaded area only lightened by the archway that leads to yet another garden area.

Condition: The painting is in good antique condition.  However, it does have imperfections, such as small areas of missing paint.  The frame is likely to be the original.  It has damage throughout, such as missing moulding/plaster and has had renovations in the past.  We prefer to keep original frames and their paintings together, however, it is possible that during transportation the frame, which is fragile, it may loose some of its moulding/plaster.  We will pack this frame with love and attention, but for the sake of any doubt, you are buying the painting and the frame comes free of charge and should there be any damage on arrival, the frame cannot be replaced or refunded.  If your painting is damaged by the shipping company, it is of course fully insured.
Signed: in the bottom left, Alice Sommer (1898-1942).  Alice Sommer was born in 1898 in Dresden. She was a German draftsman and painter who studied at the Dresden Academy and the School of Applied Arts. The impressionist Max Feldbauer became her mentor and took her in as an individual student. You can see his influence in this painting.  Although influenced by her teacher, she was also able to develop her own style and in the opinion of critics, this set her apart from the other artists of her time and makes her work an important part of the Art Deco art scene.  Alice Sommer is listed in 'Akoun' as achieving 18,000€ for a painting 65cm x 50cms 15P.
