Stunningly atmospheric dog portrait from the late 1800's signed in the lower right J Compagne. This painting was inspired by the paintings of Alexandre Gabriel Decamps who painted basset hounds in 1836. I think the breed had longer legs and shorter ears then!! Nevertheless, this is a cute painting, full of authenticity, a sideways look, good colouration and the all important large authentic antique frame...
