👨🎨ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Louis Eugène Leroux (1833-1905) See last photo. Louis was born in Paris and appeared to live there all his life, dying in the same city. He was a French painter and specialised in landscapes and genre scenes.
He was a pupil of François-Édouard Picot at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he began his training in April 1851. He was awarded a medal in 1864 and won a 3rd class medal at the 1873 Salon, along with a 2nd class medal at the 1875 Salon. His early canvases include genre scenes inspired by Brittany.
He enlisted as a volunteer in September 1870 and was seriously wounded during the battle of Buzenval,
part of the Siege of Paris and the Franco-Prussian War in January 1871 the day after Wilhelm I was proclaimed German Emperor, Louis Jules Trochu attacked the Germans west of Paris in Buzenval Park. The attackers seized the town of Saint-Cloud, coming close to the new Emperor's headquarters at Versailles. In September 1871, he was made a chevalier de la Légion d'honneur in the military category, having served with the Corps franc des tirailleurs de la Seine.He taught drawing at the Lycées Charlemagne, Janson-de-Sailly and Carnot, his works in public collections include:
