ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Fernand Labat (1889-1959) Fernand was a painter, engraver and illustrator. He began his passion for painting at the age of 6. He was the son of a civil engineer and in 1910 became a student of Paul Quinsac at the École des Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux . A scholarship allowed him to enter Gabriel Ferrier's school at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts in Paris.
During the The First World War Fernand mobilized as a telephone operator from the Aisne to the Somme then to Alsace. He was taken prisoner in 1918 then repatriated in 1919 by barge to Rotterdam, then by American ship to Cherbourg . In 1920 he was began his career at rue Asseline in Paris.
He had personal exhibitions at the Galerie Le Portique, Paris, between 1926 and 1929. This painting would have been on display at the exhibition in 1926. He also exhibited at the Galerie Georges Bernheim and Galerie Druet, both in Paris. He also exhibited at the Tuileries from 1923,
Salon d'Automne (Paris) from 1926, he became a member in 1927. .

6th Salon of Independent Bordeaux Artists, Bordeaux , October-November 1933At the end of his life, Fernand Labat retired to the artists' retirement home in Nogent-sur-Marne, where he died in February 1959. .
