A wonderful old dark and moody 19th century female oil portrait, signed and dated precisely on the back of the canvas,  20th October 1860.  It's a very beautiful but unsophisticated portrait.  A young woman sits for the artist, her hair tied neatly back, she wears a dark dress trimmed with lace and beading which is complemented by a little brooch.

Medium: Oil on stretched canvas

Overall size: 24.5ins x 21ins or 62cms x 54cms (all measurements are approx).

Date: 20th October 1860

Condition: This painting is in good and stable antique condition.  It's not perfect and there are imperfections, such as wrinkling around the edges of the canvas.  The painting’s chassis has had a gentle woodworm treatment. It's in an old frame, again with signs of wear and tear but nothing onerous and the whole presents very well.

Signed:  Ed Pfyffer (Pinxit, which in Latin means 'one painted' is a stylized amendment added to the artist's signature.  Usually found in the Late Middle Ages and the Renaissance. It can sometimes be seen  abbreviated to P, PIN, or PINX, as in some paintings by Raphael.
