Vintage oil painting of a woman sleeping by Pierre Cornu. This is a visually stunning painting by the popular French artist reknown for his nude and female portraits. A young woman lies sleeping, her book open. Her head rests upon an orange pillow as she takes an afternoon snooze. It's a simple painting with a limited but effective post impressionist palette.

Often described as self-taught, but in fact a pupil of Othon Friesz, Pierre Cornu was greatly influenced by the Impressionists in general and by Paul Cézanne in particular. He settled in Aix in his native Provence and, from 1933, exhibited in Paris at the Salon d'Automne, the Salon des Artistes Indépendants and the Salon des Tuileries.
Pierre Cornu's style - fleshy, richly-coloured and generously applied paint - is like that of many Midi painters since Auguste Chabaud, such as Pierre Ambrogiani or Max Agostini. His nudes found particular favour with the public at large. (Benezit)
Condition: This painting is in good condition as is the vintage frame, expect minor imperfections with both painting and frame. In particular, there is evidence of a previous framing (a tiny hole both bottom left and right)
