Rare 19th Century Antique French Still Life of fish on wood board in an oval frame by Jules Coulange-Lautrec (1861-1950).  This original oil painting is signed on the left.  Beautifully fresh red mullet spill out of a wicker basket to give the artist plenty of interest to transfer to his painting.  Tones range from brown to almost white with plenty of elevated interest added with impasto thickened oils and the green of the raffia lifts the painting by giving extra interest. The oval frame adds a touch of Art Nouveau, all in all it's very appealing.

Medium: Oil on wood

Overall size: 23ins x 17ins or 58cms x 43cms (all measurements are approx)

Date: 1890's

Condition: The painting is in good vintage condition, expect minor imperfections associated with age.  The frame is likely to be the original, again, age associated imperfections throughout, indentations, losses of guilding etc.

Signed: Jules Coulange-Lautrec (1861-1950) French, 19th – 20th century, male.

Born in Marseilles, he was a painter and poster artist of genre scenes and landscapes.

Jules Coulange-Lautrec was the son of Emmanuel Coulange-Lautrec, whom he succeeded as a professor at the École des Beaux-Arts in Marseilles. His anecdotal subjects can be compared to those of Roybet. His views of France, Italy, Switzerland and Spain contain stenographic writing in keeping with his publicity posters. He generally signed his works using only his last name. (Benezit)
