Vintage oil painting on wood board by Jean Colin, signed in the lower left.  This gorgeously rich oil painting, full of colour and character is a stunner!  Flowers in vases sit on a table with a book and a small bowl of oranges.  The window is framed by some nets tied back to let the night in and rich red curtains.  Thick impasto enforced brush strokes bring this painting to life with stunningly textured hues of colour, notice how the artist has used light to bring additional colour to the painting on the table and on the nets..

Signed: Yes, Jean Colin (born in Brussels on 11 August 1881 and died in Ixelles on 24 November 1961) was a Belgian painter. A native of Brussels, he was primarily a portraitist, but also painted scenes of family life, still lifes, city views, landscapes and seascapes. Although he painted mainly in oils, he also did watercolours, gouaches, charcoal, pen drawings and even etchings. His painting, which was fundamentally realistic, bore the hallmarks of Impressionism, and he was seen to produce - especially between 1910 and the early 1920s - works that were distinctly Impressionist and Fauvist. He worked both in the studio and on location.

Jean Colin (1881-1961) trained at the Académie de Bruxelles, notably with Isidore Verheyden.
Awarded the Prix de Rome in 1910, he travelled through Algeria and spent time in Florence and Venice before, it seems, even visiting Rome.
Although he mainly painted in oils, he was also a watercolourist, pastellist and engraver. His favourite subjects were portraits, female nudes and still lifes (especially flowers). He also painted a few landscapes.
His style is that of a realist rubbed with impressionism. His work, with its firm, sure touch, is entirely characterised by a great mastery of colour.
He lived in Brussels all his life, and in particular, from 1936 until his death, at 37 rue de la Charité, the home of Ateliers Mommen, in Saint-Josse-ten-Noode.
