This large and unusual antique oil painting on stretched canvas is by accomplished French artist Léon Jean Pétua. A lush romantic portrayal of a woman in a forest, dark and moody but also deeply adorned with layers of expressive oils with a multitude of green and brown hues creating the depth you would expect from a forest or dense wood. The painting is signed on the back.

Signed: Léon Jean Pétua (1846-1921) painter born in Besançon, Léon Pétua apprenticed as a photographer with Auguste Lumière, but he also wielded a pencil and brush. He was accepted at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and became a pupil of Jean-Léon Gérôme, in whose studio he won several medals. He taught drawing at Winthertur between 1875 and 1915, training many artists in the process.
Condition: This painting is in good condition but you should expect minor imperfections as well as a renovation.
