Vintage landscape post impressionist framed oil painting on canvas by Jean Arnavielle (1881-1961). This stunning landscape oil painting on stretched canvas is beautifully painted. The depth of the painting is quite incredible with a myriad of green hues layered effectively upon the canvas giving texture and interest. A woman sits besides a shady pathway flanked by a river and trees which are reflected in the water. A small village peaks out behind the foliage and you are tempted to walk the path through the shade and into the sunlight beyond.

Signed: Jean Arnavielle (1881-1961) was a French painter, etcher, aquatint artist and illustrator born in Paris, he died in the same city. He was a landscape painter of France and Spain, his work is nevertheless more strongly attached to the city of Rouen (Seine-Maritime) and the department of Nièvre.
He grew up in Paris, where his parents were wholesale jewelers on the Quai Voltaire, enjoying a fairly free childhood as a “neighborhood vagabond.” He was an early regular at performances at the nearby Cirque d'Hiver, and later became a frequent visitor to all the theaters of Paris, where he remained both a loyal spectator and a ruthless critic.
Jean Arnavielle volunteered for service during World War I and was assigned to the health service in the city of Rouen, where he formed lasting friendships with violinist Robert Krettly and actor Georges Dorival. After the armistice in 1918, he remained in Rouen for a time, where he held several exhibitions. He then returned to Paris, but kept a residence in Rouen and was known as a 'Rouennais at heart.'
