Signed: Andre Hardy (1887-1986) Born in Flers, at 80 Rue de Paris, where his parents ran a café-restaurant, he entered teacher training college at the age of fifteen. He was appointed as a teacher in Trouville, Clécy, and then Caen, at the school on Rue Guilbert, where he taught from 1909 to 1912. At the same time, he took classes at the Beaux-Arts with Raoul Douin, familiarising himself with painting and engraving. A painted frieze he used to decorate his classroom caught the attention of an inspector general.
Transferred to Puteaux and then to Bois-Colombes, he came first in the Paris city art teacher competition. He was not called up in 1914, but was simply recruited as an auxiliary in 1917. The war years in Paris took a toll on his health, he longed to return to the green countryside of Normandy.
In 1919, he voluntarily returned to teaching in Saint-Pierre-la-Vieille, from where he escaped every week to give art classes in Condé-sur-Noireau. From 1929 to 1944, he was in Douvres-la-Délivrande, where he taught industrial drawing and mathematics at the rural craft school.
His career ended in Rouen, also at a technical college, in 1947. He retired to the presbytery in Le Vey and then, from 1975, to Clécy, in the house built by his son-in-law Karel Koller.
Condition: The painting is in good vintage condition, however you should expect imperfections associated with age. The frame is also in good vintage condition, expect imperfections and renovations throughout, particulalry at the corners.
